Once Stereo Mix is displayed, right click on it and then click Enable. I tried to install the driver via Device Manager. I re-booted and now my Stereo Mix is back. If not, best option is to call Sony tech support. This is like putting the gas pedal under the seat of your car. Sony lists a Realtek driver for that laptop; that might resolve your issue. They worked perfectly, and made the analog audio sound card driver think that the analog output was in deed really needed, and keep the Stereo Mix alive.
By the way, I doubt that the problem lies with Audacity, because if I turn on stereo mix as default device it should be picking up my output regardless of what software I'm running. I was able to record what I was hearing on Audacity. Also the Speaker volume output, and the digital optical output volume controls both affect the Stereo Mix level. I tested it and it worked. I switched from a totally analog output solution to a home theater system.
